Open and enclosed trailers solve different transport needs. Compare the exact trailer rather than assuming all trailers with the same advertised size share the same useful space. An enclosed body introduces a door opening, roof and interior obstructions. An open trailer can still have restrictive rails, fenders, ramps or a gate.
Record three separate widths
Measure the usable floor width, the narrowest access opening and any pinch point along the loading path. Wheel wells, door hardware and rails may reduce the available width. Keep those dimensions separate in your notes. The Will It Fit tool checks the entered rectangular deck; it does not check whether a machine can pass through a narrower door to reach it.
Height and loading angle matter
Measure the machine at its highest transport point, including roof, lights and accessories. Measure the enclosed opening’s clear height and the interior roof. Floor and ramp angles change clearance during entry, so a static height comparison is only a first screen. Follow the ramp and trailer instructions and seek help inspecting difficult access. Do not improvise a loading approach from the calculator diagram.
An opening example
Suppose the interior is 84 inches wide but the clear rear opening is 65 inches. An illustrative 68-inch-wide UTV fails that opening check even though its footprint could fit the floor. Similarly, a 78-inch-high machine cannot pass a level 76-inch opening merely because the interior roof is 84 inches high. These are invented dimensions for demonstration, not dimensions of a listed trailer.
Compare empty weight and access to securement
Read the empty weight and GVWR of each exact trailer configuration. An enclosure can add weight, but no fixed penalty is assumed here. After allowing a working gap, can you reach the manufacturer-designated tie-down points and the trailer anchors? Verify anchor and strap ratings and their instructions. Leave room for the securement system, not just the tires. Cargo must stay secured as explained in NHTSA’s load guidance.
Can I carry fuel or run the machine inside?
The space calculator does not evaluate ventilation, fumes, flammable cargo or fire risk. Follow trailer and vehicle instructions and applicable storage/transport rules. Do not use the enclosure as an operating space based on a dimensional result. Confirm transport requirements for roofs, windshields and accessories on an open trailer as well.
What should I measure first?
Use the measurement guide to record the real footprint and deck, then collect opening height/width and intrusion measurements. Compare both trailer types using those notes and a separate weight worksheet. Recheck the setup after adding racks, storage or replacement wheels.
