3500 vs 4500 vs 5500 lb ATV/UTV Winches: Sizing Assumptions

Put the numbers to work

Use actual measurements and official ratings. Results are estimates; all inputs remain editable.

A 3500, 4500 or 5500 lb label is a rated line-pull class, not a vehicle weight rating or a promise of a successful recovery. Start with the vehicle maker’s approved winch application, mount and electrical requirements. Our calculator supplies a weight-based planning baseline; it cannot calculate the force of a stuck vehicle.

A transparent sizing comparison

For an illustrative 2200 lb conservative loaded vehicle weight, a 1.5 multiplier gives 3300 lb. The calculator’s next listed capacity is 3500 lb. A 2.0 multiplier gives 4400 lb and rounds to 4500 lb. At 2800 lb, the same 2.0 scenario gives 5600 lb, exceeding 5500 lb and rounding to 6000 lb. These are arithmetic examples, not specific product approvals.

What the extra rated capacity changes

The rated number raises the nominal selection baseline, but it does not upgrade an inadequate bracket, battery, wiring system, anchor or attachment point. A compatible complete system matters more than choosing the largest label. Check the winch’s mounting dimensions, operating instructions, line specifications, duty-cycle limits and manufacturer application guidance. Do not enter a machine’s dry weight as though it includes operating loads.

First-layer capacity versus a full drum

WARN explains that rated capacity applies at the first layer of line and available pull changes as the drum fills. The calculator does not apply an invented derating curve: the actual product’s layer-by-layer specifications control. Read WARN’s capacity explanation and your complete product manual. This page does not provide a rope-deployment or rigging procedure.

Why stuck force is not vehicle weight

Mud suction, obstacles, slopes and the recovery geometry can change resistance. A weight multiplier cannot model them. A larger rating cannot make an unsafe recovery arrangement safe. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions, keep people clear of loaded lines and equipment, and get trained or qualified assistance when unsure. Never use a vehicle recovery winch to lift people or suspend loads.

Which size should I buy?

Use the winch calculator to identify a starting range, then confirm the exact machine and product requirements. The original winch selection guide describes the baseline. Pair this with the rope and pulley reference. We publish no product winner, compatibility guarantee or fabricated recommendation.

Is a 2.0 multiplier a safety factor?

It is an additional planning scenario offered by this website, not an engineering certification. The calculator’s rounded result is still conditional on product limitations and real recovery demands. Increasing an input multiplier does not establish a safe anchor, component load or approved recovery method.
